Inspiration Board - Peacock Feathered Lashes

Inspiration boards are essential to the photoshoot.  It helps you to get a clear picture of the kind of work you would like to do and how you would put your own creative touch to the makeup.  For this photoshoot I had these great peacock feathered lashes that I wanted to incorporate.  Part of getting my inspiration board together I researched peacocks and their true colorings and markings placement.  And I got inspired by other artists work.  Once I got my idea clearly, I put together an inspiration board like this one to hang up on the mirror or wall where my station was set up at.  Any time I got stuck, I could quickly reference my board to get me back on track.

As you can see, my work looks nothing like the pictures above.  It's my own creation.  But the pictures helped me to stay inspired and keep me moving.

Teen Makeovers - Kelsey's Monochromatic Look

For Kelsey we did a monochromatic look that is perfect for daytime.  Monochromatic just means that it's the same color family from eyes and cheeks, to lips.  Kelsey has blue eyes and fair skin so a color tinted from the orange family of colors look amazing and make her blue eyes pop.  With accessories like that blue flower and peacock inspired earrings she is wearing compliment her eyes even more. 

To get Kelseys monochromatic look....

Eyes:

Urban Decay Chopper eyeshadow all over the lid, crease and lower lash line.  This color looks amazing on blue eyes.

Urban Decay Foxy eyeshadow on the brow bone.  (Both Urban Decay colors are from the Naked 2 Palette)

Make Up Forever Aqua eyeliner in Black.

L'Oreal Voluminous mascara in Very Black.

Cheeks:

MAC Cosmetics blush in Melba.

Lips:

MAC Cosmetics lipstick in Mocha.

Hair...

Kelsey's hair already had curl to it and it was coarse.  So I took a very hot 1" iron to it to define her natural  curls a little bit more.  Then I seperated each peice.  Hairspray wasn't even needed her hair kept a curl so well!

Prom Makeup and Hair for Bright Colored Dresses

If you opt for a bright color dress, try matching the pop color on your lips.  This looks amazing with spring trends like fuchsia, coral, and berry.  When you do a bright lip, try to tone down your eyes to let your lips shine and not look like your putting on too much makeup. 

To get this look....

Eyes: Urban Decay YDK eyeshadow in a smokey eye effect and on the lower lash line. 

Urban Decay Bootycall eyeshadow just on the brow bone.

Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes eyeliner in Black and wing it out.

NYX Round Lipstick in Chloe.

For the Hair...

I used a 3/4" curling iron with Sebastian Shine and Define Setting Spray.  I curled away from the face in sections.  Then combed through the hair with my fingers to soften up the look.  I finished with Sebastian medium hold hairspray.

Teen Makeovers - Tabitha's Easy Natural Look

When it comes to Teen Makeup less is more.  It really doesn't take a lot to make a big impact.  With Tabitha's look we kept it soft and natural.  She has beautiful skin, and just needed a little bit of concealing under the eyes. 

To get the look....

Prep:

Make Up Forever All Mat Primer on the face to keep oily skin at bay.

MAC Cosmetics Paint Pot in Painterly on the lids.

Face:

Make Up Forever HD Foundation in 118 mixed with a little bit of an oil free lotion to become more of a tinted moisturizer. (Budget substitute: Revlon Photo Ready Foundation)

Mary Kay Concealer in Ivory 2 just under the eyes to cover dark circles.  I use a fluffy brush to buff out the concealer and make it look more airbrushed.

Eyes:

Urban Decay Busted eyeshadow all over the lid just to the crease with a domed eyeshadow brush. (Found in the Naked2 palette)

Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes eyeliner in black just to darken the lash line. (Any black eyeliner will do.)

Maybelline Great Lash mascara in Black.

Brows:

Filled in with MAC Cosmetics eyeshadow in Espresso with a small angled brush. (Any matte eyeshadow in your hair color)

Cheeks:

MAC Cosmetics blush in Melba. (A peachy color)

Lips:

MAC Cosmetics lipstick in High Tea. (Sheer beige)

To get the hairstyle....

Tabitha has dry and slightly coarse hair so I softened it up with a smoothing cream like Kerastase Lumiere Nutri-sculpt.  Then I just ran a 1" straightening iron to make the hair smooth and tame fly aways.  Finish with a light holding spray and a little embellishment on the side.

*Tip:  Anchor the clip on the side by criss crossing two bobby pins and then place the flower clip over that.

Awaiting Spring Makeup Tutorial

With the weather being like it has been it's making me crazy for spring!   There are so many amazing spring trends this year.  And one of them is the still going bohemian style.  Add a metallic smokey eye and berry lips and you have your updated 2012 edition.  Read on to get the how to on Tatyana's easy to create look!

To get this look:

Makeup....

MAC eyeshadow in Antiqued all of the lid, crease and lower lash line.
MAC blush in Melba
MAC lipstick in Russian Red "stained" on the lips.  (To stain, apply lipstick with a lip brush and press your lips firmly together.  Blot with a tissue.  Don't use any lipliner.  This will give it a slightly bleeded effect, thus looking stained.)
Red Cherry #747S cut into demi lashes.

Hair....
Tatiana came with her hair in a bun slightly damp.  This caused the hair to have a natural curly look with out ever touching an iron.  She just gave it a little life by scrunching it with her hands right before the shoot.

Feathered Lashes!! OMG so GORGEOUS!

This is probably one on my most absolute favorite photoshoots ever!  These lashes were so fun and the hair was immaculate.  Although it was hard for the models to get into character (they kept giggling   It's hard being so serious!) they did an amazing job!  Warren the photographer is so light and happy all the time, made for some fun times.  I can't wait to do another lash shoot.  Lashes are my passion!

Get the Look - Sultry Neutral Bridal

Get this Look! Modern Day Marilyn Monroe Makeup

One of my most favorite shoots ever!  We used the Dolce and Gabbana with Scarlett Johansson ads as our inspiration to create these Marilyn Monroe - ish pictures.  Kristina Lindenburg was absolutely the best model for this.  She easily captured the subtle sexiness that we were going for!  With the right lighting and photography from Cole Garcia of Shin Kicker Studios and hair by Stacey Barton, Makeup by me, it was a winning combination! 

An easy way to get this look:

Eyes-  This is a glamed up 50's version.  So we didn't go skimpy here.  We used MAC All that Glitters eyeshadow all over the lid and MAC Espresso eyeshadow in the outer v and the crease.  Add drama with bold black eyeliner and false eyelashes.

Lips- Go with a dark berry look.  Here we used MAC Lipstick in Rebel.

Face- Keep the foundation Matte looking and add a very soft berry pink blush.  We used Mary Kay Strawberry Cream blush. 

Tip:  Make sure to fill in the brows for a slightly bold look.

Attention Past Brides - Dust Off Your Wedding Dress and Get a Redo of Wedding Photos FREE!

That's right, you heard me!  Dust off your dress and all of your accessories and get a second change at being a bride without all the wedding hassles for FREE!  This is a trade for shoot which means you get the professional services and photos for free in exchange for permission for the professionals to use the photos for promotional purpose only.  These will not be for sale. 

Maybe you just loved your dress so much you want to wear it again, or you didn't get the pictures you hoped for from your photographer, or maybe you just want to relive wearing that costly dress you only got to wear once.  There will be a professional hair stylist, makeup artist, and photographer to capture you in your gown.  You can even get your Maid of Honor, Bridesmaid's, Flower Girl, Mother, or Hubby in on it.  Have them bring their attire they wore.  Some fun ideas for this shoot:

We are looking for all ages, shapes, colors etc.  It is not limited.  We want the real world girl here!  So if you think you can't model, don't be afraid to apply!  We will help you!  If your dress is ancient (IE 80's) we will probably not do a serious shoot but a Trash the Dress would be recommended or something else fun.

You must be able to provide your own dress, veil, accessories etc.  Also you must be able to provide or help provide props for the concept we agree on.  You must be able to travel to Folsom CA during the week for the shoot.

Makeup Tips for Engagement Photos

Getting engagement photos professionally done are one of the most important things on your to do list right now since getting engaged.  It time stamps how you and your fiance looked at this memorable time.  And likely you will use these photos for your "save the date", at your wedding, and you will be hanging this in your home that you have built together.  So it is equally as important to look your best.  If you can't hire a makeup artist, here are some tips that you can do on your own. 

1. Get your eyebrows waxed!  Uni brows and thin brows are out.  Natural and groomed brows are in. The eyebrows are the frame for you eyes.  Big bushy eyebrows take away from your eyes, which is the single most important thing to stand out in your pictures.  Besides the obvious, your love:)  If your brows are too thin, of course skip this step.  But you will want to work on getting them thicker.  To grow them out, stop plucking and waxing immediately.  I like to use Latisse or some kind of lash grower on the brow area only.  It's effective and it works!  However, this may take a few months to do for the hair cycle.

2. Don't wax no earlier then a week before your scheduled photo shoot.  Sometimes you can have a reaction to the wax.  You certainly don't want to find this out as you have your wax the day before. 

3. Start using a daily scrub to buff out dull and lifeless skin.  I personally love Aveeno Daily Scrub $6 found at drug stores everywhere.  It's cheap, and works really well. 

4. Hydrate your skin inside and out.  This means 8-10 glasses of water daily and moisturizing with a good moisturizer day and night.  Use the type of moisturizer that is meant for your skin type.  Oily skin should use a water based oil free moisturizer.  And dry skin should use a thicker and richer type of moisturizer meant for dry skin. 

5. Don't skip on the eye gel!  Time and time again I get a bride with very dry skin around the eyes.  It is so dry that the moisturizers I use just soak in so fast and it begs for more.  I'm serious, the skin tells me that:)  Opt for an eye gel over an eye lotion.  Gels absorb better in the skin and won't clog the pores in this very delicate area. 

6. Makeup Tips!  Go for a natural look.  Just be your best self.  Attempting an over the top look will just look ridiculous.  Since you will be on camera you could afford to go slightly more dramatic since the camera won't pick up all the detail.  Check out my post here on the best eye shadows for you eye color here for tips on your best colors. Pairing these shades with complimentary blush and lip color will leave you looking picture perfect.  If you want a bit more drama, you can choose to wear a pair of false eyelashes.  Just be sure to get them so they are not too long or thick.  Think naturally beautiful here.  A pair of demi lashes is a good choice and are easy to get on.  Demi lashes are "half" lashes that are not a full lash and are just added to outer part of the lashes to add flair.  Check out this video for how to apply false lashes. 

7. Wear a good foundation.  I personally love liquid foundations.  You get great coverage and if you pick the right color for you it will disappear into the skin like a lotion.  Make Up Forever HD Foundation is my all time favorite.  It's spendy, but the finish is absolutely beautiful and meant for High Definition cameras.  To match your perfect color test it on your collarbone, not your face.  Often our faces won't tan, or there is less pigment.  You want your face to blend with your body. 

To get the look in the photos above- I used on Olesha Taupless by MAC all over the lid and lightly on the brow bone.  Haux by MAC in the crease.  Lips are a light plumy pink lip gloss and I used Dame blush by MAC on the cheeks.  L'Oreal Voluminous mascara in black and MAC Raven Eye Kohl.  Super easy and very chic.

OMG Can this Couple be any Cuter?! Amy and Gill

Isn't this longtime married couple seriously so adorable?  I absolutely love doing makeup for Amy.  These beautiful shots are for their family photos.  See, having a makeup artist isn't just for weddings!  If your paying for professional photos, wouldn't you want to look your best?  I think Amy here, looks amazing!  For Amy's look she wanted to look like her best self.  So we kept the palette neutral with a little "pop" from false eyeslashs.  Love.
