How to Choose the Right Eyeshadow for your Eye Color

Although I don't believe in "rules" for Makeup Artistry, since it is "artistry", there are some guidelines to follow for the best possible way to make your eyes pop.  Typically a contrasting shade, not a similar shade, is best.  For example, blue eyes with blue eyeshadow don't offer that "wow" effect in making the blue eyes stand out amongst the color.  Instead the eyes kind of gets swallowed up in the color of the lid and just looks more blue.  Brown eyes have the most choices being a neutral color.  Jewel tones are also amazing on browns.

Colory Theory:
Without going too indepth about Color Theory, the simplest way to put it is that any three colors next to each other are related colors.  While the colors directly opposite each other are complimentary.  To enhance your eye color choose related colors - similar shades will intensify it's color.  On the opposite spectrum, make your eye color "pop" with dramatic contrast choosing complimentary colors.  For example, orange is the opposite for blue on the color wheel.  So an eyeshadow with an orange tint such as a coppery color will make them really stand out.

Here are the guidelines to follow for your eye color:

Blue
Complimentary-Taupes, warm browns, soft peaches, copper, ocher, terracotta
Related- Navy Blue
Green
Complimentary -Golden red browns, warm taupes, deep and soft purples, wines, burgundy
Related - Moss green
Brown
Complimentary -Brown does not have a complimentary color.  But most colors look amazing.  Bring out the gold in brown by choosing soft browns with a golden tint.  Purples and greens look stunning on browns.
Related - Chocolates
Hazel
Complimentary- Blue, violet, purple, red tones like burgundy.
Related- Olive, gold, emerald green, and orange tones.

Congratulations Jen and Brian! A Wedding in Coloma California - October 8th 2011

I just adore weddings.  And having the honor to do Jen's makeup was amazing!  Her wedding was a country casual style in beautiful Coloma California at the Bella Vista Bed and Breakfast.  The views from this estate are breathless!  Jen was so relaxed and ready to get married!  She has so many lovely details and I could tell this wedding was going to be really special.  Turns out her Father in Law to be happened to be a friend of mine I hadn't seen in years!  What a small world.  It made my heart even happier for these two wonderful people to come together and be married.  Jen's wedding look is a soft smokey eye and a natural lip.  I also used medium length individual lashes on her for the most natural looking lashes with a little bit of "pow":)

Here are some fun behind the scene looks!

Congratulations Eva & Dan! A Beautiful Vintage - Country Wedding! October 1st 2011

In October I had the pleasure of doing the makeup for Eva and her super fun Bridesmaids.  Her wedding was a country vintage them and they had their reception in an old rustic barn.  She got ready in the oh so fabulously vintage Citizen Hotel.  The focus for her makeup was bright red "vintage" lipstick and neutral toned eyeshadow with bold lashes. She had so many beautiful details and she was flawless!

2012 - The Best Year Ever!!

I am really looking forward to 2012.  I know that this year will be even better then 2011 and I have so many exciting things planned!  2011 was an incredible year for my Makeup Artist Business.  Here are my highlights of 2011:

1. I did more photoshoots and weddings then ever.
2. Published in Bay Fashion Magazine's largest ever Swim Suit Edition.
3. My first ever Satellite Media Tour.
4. Makeup for Kennie's Doll Spring and Summer's lines.
5. Record number of workshops and private lessons.
6. Became a PRO member with MAC Cosmetics and Make Up Forever.
7. Started to do a few video tutorials to help my followers learn more makeup tips.
8. Posted consistently on my blog providing tips, reviews, and tutorials.
9. Finally started marketing my business with huge support on Facebook (almost 300 fans in one year!), YouTube and my blog.  Also I received incredible reviews on Yelp and the Wedding Wire Network.
10.  As seen on www.marthastewartweddings.com, www.projectwedding.com, www.brides.com, www.bestcityweddings.com, www.weddingaces.com, www.weddingbee.com and now www.eventwire.com!
11. Built an incredible portfolio and made so many new friends along the way with hairstylists, photographers, and models.
12. Brand new gorgeous website!  http://www.michellekinkaidmakeup.com/

Wow!  I look back on that list and I think "I really made some headway this year.  That is amazing!".  I am really really proud of this and I thank you for all your support and love along the way.    Now it's onward to 2012 and I know this year will trump 2011.  Some of my goals for the New Year are:

1. Become Airbrush Certified.  (My class starts Jan 8th and 9th in LA!  I am soooo excited!)
2. Offer Hair Services and be a one stop place for my Brides.  I've partnered up with Carrie B. Mac Hair and she is amazing.  Simple styling will be done by me as I get more fully trained.
3. Become a Makeup Artist Pro member and attend the largest Makeup Artist show in the country, IMATS, in June.
4. Do more weddings and photoshoots then what I did in 2011.
5. Get published 2 more times.
6. Do more workshops and private lessons.
7. More marketing and networking for my Makeup Artist and Hair business.
8. Learn more and gain more experience though classes and on the job learning.
9. Post consistently on YouTube - once or twice a week, to teach more tutorials in a visual kind of way.
10.  Post consistently on my blog offering more to the readers.  3-4 times a week.
11.  Post tips of the week, product deals, sneak peaks, and more on Facebook.
12. Get more followers on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and my Blog.

For 2012 I basically want to do more of the same.  And get more education and offer more services.  I am really looking forward to a successful year!  Here's to everyone for a successful and prosperous 2012!

Red Lips for your Wedding Day? YES!

One of my favorite wedding day looks includes red lips.  It is just so timeless and classic if done right.  Make sure your eyes are toned down my using lighter neutral colors.  Add a bit of bold by winging out your black eyeliner and adding thinker false eyelashes.  Marilyn Monroe did the red lip look so perfect.  So use her as your inspiration.  Some woman will pair up the look with vintage hair styling.  But as you can see here a soft long romantic look works well too.

Red comes in so many shades.  For a wedding look go for a subdued red unless you are ultra daring and can pull off a bright red.  Typically warmer toned skin looks better in orange based reds and lighter or cooler tones look best with a blue toned red.  I have blue eyes and medium toned skin.  So my best red is a raspberry or blue toned shade of red.  Red is also very pigmented and typically in the matte range.  That means it can dry out your lips and wear off in some areas more quickly then others and it can be noticeable.  Use a lipgloss for extra moisture and be sure to take the tube of lipstick with you in your bag for touch ups later.

To avoid getting red lipstick on your teeth a trick from movie stars is to rub a thin layer of Vaseline along your teeth.  The key here is a THIN layer!  You do not want to have goopy teeth.  If you mess up when applying to your lips, simply use some concealer on a concealing brush to erase your mistakes and get a perfect line.  Finish off with a bit of lipgloss just in the center of your lips.  And Va Va voom you have gorgeous red lips!

I'm PUBLISHED!! Bay Fashion Magazine Swim Suit Edition- Their Largest EVER!

Again, better late then never....

So I realize this was published July 2011, but I never posted it here so I have to show off!  I am very proud to announce that I did the makeup on 3 beautiful Bay Area models for the largest ever Bay Fashion Magazine Swimsuit edition!  And all 3 got published!  It was a really long day.  I had to drive to the East Bay at 5am to make a call time of 8am.  It ran so late I didn't get to go on location because I had to make the drive back home too.  But the experience was amazing.  I really really hope I'll get to do it again with them.  This magazine is very fashion forward and they push themselves with every issue to get better and more artistic.  I love that!  Check out the tearsheets here:  (The model on the far bottom right is not my work).

The themes for the shoots were Rock and Roll/Edgy, Vintage Pin Up, and Sports Illustrated.  Can you guess which is which?
